Is pressure washing safe on timber decking?

Accepted Answer

Yes, at low pressure with a fan nozzle worked along the grain. High pressure raises the timber fibres and leaves a furry, damage-prone surface, so we deliberately clean decking more gently than paving.

Can you remove the green slippery film?

Accepted Answer

That film is algae, and it is the main slip hazard on decking. Washing removes the bulk of it and a timber-safe treatment kills what remains in the grain so it takes far longer to return.

Do you clean composite decking too?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Composite boards are cleaned at lower pressure with an appropriate detergent, which lifts algae and ingrained dirt without marking the surface texture.

Should decking be oiled or stained after cleaning?

Accepted Answer

It is the ideal moment — the boards are clean and open. Oil or stain is applied once the timber is thoroughly dry, usually a day or two after washing depending on weather.

Will loose or rotten boards be picked up?

We flag any soft, split or badly fixed boards we find while cleaning so you can decide whether to replace them before the finish is applied.

How often should decking be cleaned in Sussex?

Once a year for most gardens, ideally in spring. Shaded decking under trees, or anything close to a lawn, benefits from an autumn clean as well.
