Where boards are cracked, brittle, sun-bleached beyond recovery, or where timber behind them has rotted. In that case cleaning only postpones the job.

Do you replace the timber behind the boards?

Yes. Rotten rafter feet and wall plates are cut back and repaired before new fascia, soffit and guttering are fitted, otherwise the new roofline hides an ongoing problem.

For a clean, no — we work around it. For a replacement the gutters come off and are usually renewed at the same time, since the labour and access are already there.
