Roof cleaning and bio side

Roof cleaning across the Sussex countryside

We recently travelled across the Sussex countryside to assist a homeowner who was concerned about the deteriorating state of their roof. The tiles had become heavily congested with thick moss, lichen and general environmental grime, which not only looked unsightly but was beginning to impact the drainage of the property. With over twenty years of experience in exterior cleaning, we knew exactly how to restore the aesthetic appeal of the home while ensuring the structural integrity of the roofing materials remained completely intact throughout the process.

Starting with a careful manual scrape

Our approach began with a manual scrape to remove the bulk of the moss growth. We believe in being thorough yet gentle, so we avoid using high-pressure water directly on delicate tiles which can cause damage or water ingress. Instead, we used specialised scraping tools shaped to the profile of the tiles to lift away the organic matter safely. Once the heavy debris was cleared and the gutters were emptied of the fallout, we moved on to the technical side of the treatment.

Applying the biocidal treatment

We applied a professional-grade biocidal wash designed to kill off any remaining microscopic spores that the initial cleaning might have missed. The equipment we use allows us to apply these treatments at a low, controlled pressure, ensuring deep penetration into the surface of the tile without any risk of cracking or displacement. After allowing the solution to dwell and do its work, we performed a careful rinse to reveal the true colour and texture of the roof underneath.

The finished result

The cleaning was immediate in its effect, and the homeowner was pleased with how the job was handled. The result was a clean, uniform finish that significantly boosted the kerb appeal of the entire property. To ensure the roof stays in this condition, we advised that the biocide continues to work over the coming months, weather-protecting the tiles and preventing immediate regrowth. We typically recommend a light maintenance spray every few years to keep the moss at bay indefinitely.
