Clearing blocked gutters in Mid Sussex

We were recently called out to a property in Mid Sussex where the homeowner had noticed water cascading over the edges of the guttering during the heavy rainfall we have been experiencing lately. Upon our arrival, it was clear that the high-level troughs were completely congested with a dense mixture of damp moss, rotted leaves, and silt that had built up over several seasons. This buildup was not only preventing proper drainage but was also starting to put a strain on the brackets due to the sheer weight of the debris.

Tackling the heavy debris build-up

The exterior plastics and window panes had also become quite dull and streaked from the overflow, detracting from the overall look of the home. We began the process by manually clearing the heavy blockages from the gutters, ensuring that every handful of organic matter was removed and that the downpipes were fully tested for flow. Once we were satisfied that the drainage system was functioning perfectly, we turned our attention to the aesthetics.

Low-pressure washing for soffits and fascias

We used a gentle, low-pressure wash combined with a mild, biodegradable cleaning solution to break down the grime on the soffits and fascias without risking damage to the seals. This approach is important on older plastic fittings, as excessive pressure can force water behind the joints and cause more harm than good. We worked carefully along the roofline, rinsing each section as we went.

Streak-free window cleaning

We then moved on to the windows, using our pure water system to lift away the stubborn residues left behind by the gutter overflow, followed by a thorough rinse to ensure a streak-free finish that allows the light back into the rooms. The difference was noticeable straight away, with the glass looking clear and the frames looking much brighter than before.

Keeping on top of maintenance

The work left the exterior looking refreshed and, more importantly, fully protected against water damage. We advised the customer that keeping the gutters clear is the most effective way to prevent dampness from creeping into the brickwork or roofline. Given the number of large trees surrounding this particular Sussex property, we recommended a professional inspection at least once a year, ideally in late autumn, to stay ahead of any potential blockages.
