We recently visited a lovely home in Hurstpierpoint to tackle a comprehensive driveway and patio cleaning project. The homeowner had noticed that both outdoor spaces were looking tired after a damp winter. The driveway had a stubborn build-up of moss and weeds in the joints, while the rear patio had become slippery underfoot due to a thick layer of green algae and black spot lichen. Clearing the driveway joints

We began on the driveway, using our professional pressure washing equipment to clear the accumulated debris from the gaps between the blocks. The key here was regulating the pressure carefully. We wanted to remove the weeds, moss and grit without disturbing the sub-base beneath the paving. Working methodically across the whole drive, we cleared each joint and lifted the surface grime that had built up over the wet months.

Treating the algae on the patio

Moving to the rear of the property, the patio needed a different approach. The stonework was heavily affected by organic growth, so we applied a specialist biodegradable detergent designed to break down black spot and algae at the root. This step matters because it lifts the spores out of the stone itself, giving a much deeper and longer-lasting clean than water pressure alone would achieve. We allowed the treatment time to work before moving on to the rinse.

Rinsing and finishing the job

Once the treatment had done its job, we carried out a thorough rinse of the entire patio and driveway area. We made sure all runoff was safely managed and that the surrounding flower beds stayed protected throughout. The difference was immediately visible, with the original colours of the stone and block paving coming back through clearly. To finish the driveway properly, we returned once the ground had dried and swept in fresh kiln-dried sand. This stabilises the blocks and helps prevent weeds from taking hold again.

Keeping the surfaces looking their best

To keep these surfaces in good condition, we advised the homeowner to clear fallen leaves and move standing pots regularly, as trapped moisture is the main cause of regrowth. A simple seasonal rinse with a garden hose also helps maintain the finish we achieved.
