Oil stain removal on a Burgess Hill driveway

We were asked to look at a block paved driveway in Burgess Hill that had become heavily stained with oil. Over the years, oil drips from parked cars had soaked into the paving, leaving dark patches that really stood out against the rest of the surface. On top of that, the driveway had a significant amount of moss growing in the joints and across the surface, which made the whole area look tired and unkempt.

Assessing the paving before cleaning

When we arrived, it was clear the driveway had not been properly cleaned for some time. The moss had taken hold in the joints between the blocks, and the sand that should have been holding everything together had washed away or broken down. The oil stains were concentrated around where the cars were parked, and some of these had been there long enough to soak deep into the block paving.

Pressure washing and moss treatment

We started by pressure washing the entire driveway, working methodically across the surface to remove the moss, dirt and general grime. We adjusted the pressure to suit the condition of the block paving so that we could shift the built-up growth without damaging the surface. For the oil stains, we spent extra time working on those areas to draw out as much of the oil as possible. The difference was noticeable almost immediately, with the dark patches lifting from the blocks.

Re-sanding the joints

Once the driveway was clean and dry, we turned our attention to the joints. With the old sand gone and the moss removed, the gaps between the blocks were left open and unstable. We re-sanded the whole driveway to fill the joints properly, which gives the paving much better stability and helps prevent weeds and moss from taking hold again. This step also gave the driveway a much more even, finished appearance.

Sealing and final result

To finish the job, we applied a sealer to the driveway. This not only protects the block paving from future oil spills and weathering but also helps keep the colour consistent across the surface. Once the sealer had cured, the driveway looked clean, fresh and well cared for. The oil stains had been lifted, the moss was gone, and the joints were properly filled. It was a satisfying job to complete, and the driveway now looks far more presentable and easier to keep on top of going forward.
