Block paving restoration in Burgess Hill

We recently visited a property in Burgess Hill, West Sussex, to restore a block-paved driveway that had become heavily weathered and overgrown. Being based in the RH15 area ourselves, we see many driveways like this one where the damp Sussex climate has allowed moss to take root in the joints and algae to create a slippery, unsightly film across the surface. The customer was keen to get the frontage looking smart again, not just for the sake of appearances but to ensure the walkway remained safe and slip-resistant during the wetter months.

Treating the weeds before cleaning

Our first step was to treat the area with a professional-grade weed killer to ensure that any deep-seated growth was tackled at the root before we began the physical cleaning process. With over 20 years of experience, we know that skipping this step often leads to weeds returning within weeks. Once the treatment had taken effect, we set up our professional jet washing equipment. We are always careful to adjust our pressure settings to suit the specific condition of the blocks, ensuring we remove every trace of lichen and grime without damaging the integrity of the stone or the sub-base beneath.

Rinsing down and re-sanding the joints

After a thorough deep clean, we meticulously rinsed down the entire area, including the surrounding walls and pathways, to ensure no muddy residue was left behind. We then allowed the driveway to dry completely before returning to apply fresh kiln-dried sand. This is a vital part of the process for block paving, as the sand stabilises the blocks and prevents them from shifting under the weight of vehicles. The result was a driveway that looked as good as the day it was first laid, with clean, sharp lines and a uniform finish across the entire surface.

Keeping the driveway in good condition

To keep a driveway in this condition, we always recommend a light sweep every few weeks to prevent organic matter from settling in the joints. Regular maintenance prevents the build-up of silt which otherwise provides a perfect breeding ground for new weeds.
