We recently visited a home in Burgess Hill to help with a driveway that had certainly seen better days. The client in the RH15 area contacted us because their front entrance had become heavily weathered over several years of damp Sussex winters. A stubborn layer of dark algae, lichen spots and road grime had settled into the pores of the stone, leaving the surface looking tired and, more importantly, quite slippery underfoot when wet.

Assessing the surface before we started

Before any cleaning began, we cleared the area and took time to assess the condition of the substrate. Pressure washing with a flat surface cleaner

We used our professional-grade pressure washing equipment for this job, carefully calibrating the water flow and pressure to suit the condition of the stone. Rather than working with a standard wand, we used a flat surface cleaner, which gave us a uniform deep clean across the whole area. This method lifted the deep-seated dirt and organic growth that domestic machines simply cannot shift, and we worked methodically across the driveway to make sure no section was missed.

Treating lichen and moss spores

During the cleaning process, we incorporated biodegradable cleaning solutions to treat the lichen and moss spores. This stage is important because it neutralises the roots of the growth, which helps prevent the greenery from returning straight away. Once the solution had been given time to work, we carried out a thorough rinse of the entire site, including the surrounding brickwork and drainage channels, so everything was left clean and tidy.

The finished result and keeping it that way

Once the surface had dried, the difference was particularly noticeable. The original colour and texture of the driveway had come back through, and the property's kerb appeal was instantly improved. To keep a driveway in this condition, we always recommend a regular sweep to remove leaves and twigs, as organic debris can lead to staining if left to rot.
