Block paving driveway cleaning in Burgess Hill

We recently headed out to a residential property in Burgess Hill to assist a homeowner whose driveway had become quite a concern over the winter months. As a local family business with over twenty years of experience working across West Sussex, we know exactly how the damp climate in the RH15 area can affect block paving. This particular driveway had lost its original colour under a thick layer of green algae and stubborn black spot, which not only looked untidy but was becoming incredibly slippery underfoot. The customer was keen to have the kerb appeal restored while ensuring the structural integrity of the bricks was protected during the process.

Preparing the surface before pressure washing

We began the project by thoroughly sweeping the area to remove loose debris and leaves before setting up our professional-grade pressure washing equipment. Because block paving requires a delicate balance, we used a high-flow, controlled pressure setting to lift the deep-seated grime without displacing the sub-base or damaging the edges of the blocks. We worked methodically across the whole driveway, taking extra care around the borders and any areas where the paving met the house walls or drainage channels.

Treating the algae and black spot

To tackle the organic growth that water alone cannot reach, we applied a specialist biodegradable treatment designed to kill off spores at the root. This ensures that the moss and algae do not simply return a few weeks later. We took great care to rinse the entire area systematically, ensuring all runoff was managed properly and that the surrounding flower beds and brickwork remained completely clean. The treatment was left to work into the paving before the final rinse, which lifted the worst of the staining away.

Re-sanding the joints for stability

Once the surface was fully dried, we returned to complete the final stage of the restoration. We applied a premium kiln-dried sand to the joints, which is essential for stabilising the blocks and preventing future weed growth. The sand was brushed well into every joint and any excess was removed, leaving a tidy, level finish across the whole driveway.

The finished driveway in Burgess Hill

The result was a driveway that had its original colour brought back through, with a bright, clean finish that completely changed the look of the front of the house. To keep the area looking its best, we advised the customer to give the surface a light sweep occasionally and to monitor for any new growth in the shaded corners.
