Driveway and patio cleaning in Sussex

We recently travelled to a lovely property in the heart of Sussex to help a homeowner whose outdoor spaces had lost their former glory. The project involved a complete overhaul of both the main driveway and the rear patio area, both of which had suffered from a significant buildup of organic growth over the winter months. The surfaces were heavily weathered, covered in a thick layer of green algae and stubborn black spot lichen that made the ground incredibly slippery when wet. It was clear that a professional touch was needed to restore safety and kerb appeal to the home.

Assessing the different surface materials

We began the process by carefully assessing the different materials used in the driveway and patio to ensure we used the most effective and safest methods. For the driveway, we utilised our professional-grade pressure washing equipment, which allows us to maintain precise control over the water flow. This ensures we remove every trace of dirt and moss without causing any structural damage to the surface or the pointing. On the patio area, we were particularly mindful of the delicate stone, adjusting our approach accordingly.

Treating the stubborn lichen on the patio

The patio required a little more attention than the driveway. We applied a specially formulated, biodegradable chemical treatment to break down the deep-seated lichen spores that standard water pressure alone cannot shift. This was left to work into the surface before we moved on to the rinsing stage. Throughout the afternoon, we worked systematically to rinse away the loosened debris, ensuring that all drainage channels were kept clear and that the surrounding flower beds remained protected throughout.

The finished result after cleaning

Once the surfaces were thoroughly cleaned and rinsed, the difference was immediately apparent. The natural colours of the stone were visible once again, and the entire property looked refreshed and well-maintained. The slippery algae had been fully removed, which made the areas considerably safer underfoot. We pride ourselves on this level of detail, drawing on our twenty years of experience to get the job done right the first time.

Maintenance advice for the homeowner

To keep the areas looking their best, we advised the customer on basic maintenance, such as regular sweeping to prevent leaf mulch from staining the stone. We also recommended a professional top-up treatment every year or two to keep the algae at bay. It was a pleasure to leave the property in much better condition than we found it.
