Block paving cleaning in Burgess Hill

We were asked to clean a block paved driveway in Burgess Hill that had become tired and uneven in appearance. The paving had been down for a number of years, and over time dirt and grime had worked its way into the surface and the joints. Some of the gaps between the blocks had opened up, leaving the paving exposed and with fixed gaps that needed proper attention.

Assessing the condition of the driveway

When we arrived, the driveway was generally sound underfoot, but the joints between the blocks were in poor condition. The sand that normally holds block paving together had washed out or settled over time, leaving gaps that were open and uneven. This not only spoils the look of the drive but also allows weeds to take hold and can lead to movement in the blocks if left too long.

Pressure washing and weed treatment

We started by pressure washing the full driveway, adjusting the pressure to suit the condition of the block paving. We worked methodically across the area to remove the built-up dirt and grime from the surface and out of the joints. The gaps between the blocks were cleaned out properly so that they were ready for re-sanding. Once the cleaning was complete, we applied a weed treatment to the exposed joints. This was left to work before any further finishing was carried out.

Returning to re-sand the joints

Because weed treatment needs time to do its job, we returned 72 hours later to re-sand the driveway. The sand was brushed into the cleaned joints and compacted down, filling the gaps properly so the blocks were held firmly in place again. This is an important step with block paving, as it stops the blocks from shifting and helps prevent weeds from returning.

The finished driveway

Once the re-sanding was finished, the driveway had a much cleaner and more even appearance. The original colour of the blocks came back through, and the joints were properly filled rather than exposed and open. The customer now has a driveway that looks well cared for and is easier to maintain going forward. Regular cleaning and occasional re-sanding will keep it in good shape for years to come.
